Umrao Jaan

A film like Umrao Jaan is not for the laity. The movie's setting (19th century Lucknow), its story, its characters and the dialogues they speak, nothing conforms to the cinematic tastes of a contemporary viewer. Yet the heart-rending tale of Umrao Jaan stands out for a sensitive viewer to empathize with. And full credit should be given to J.P. Dutta for sensible, skillful direction and to Aishwarya Rai for her emphatic performance.Umrao Jaan is the story of a woman whose life is filled with one misfortune after another.

Pinjar

The saga of human strength during trying times. Pinjar is the strength and hope that epitomizes the way many people responded to a brutal past. Based on the novel by veteran writer Amrita Pritam, the film takes history into an unexplored sphere. Puro is the symbol of undaunted strength and determination, filled with dreams and desires. She loved life and all it's small pleasures. And one incident forced her to face death slowly, but she derived inspiration and a reason to live because she couldn't see the plight of other women around her.

Krrish

Krrish opens with the very young and chubby boy Krishna Mehra unveiling his precocious talents to his astounded school instructors, who begin to test him for his I.Q. level. Krishna's grandmother (Rekha), fearful of the consequences, takes Krishna far, far away and raises him in the isolation of the forests and mountains. Years later, Krishna (Hrithik Roshan) is now an innocent, sheltered (but very well muscled) young man, at peace with nature and its creatures. And he grins a lot, I'm assuming because he's pure of heart or something.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

It has been a while since I sat through a film that made me smile, and at times even break into a hearty laughter. Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na did both. The film, by Aamir Khan Productions and directed by Abbas Tyrewala, is about love. Jaane Tu, in fact, is a very bare bones film that you know the story of: young people growing up, growing apart and growing in love. So we have Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D Souza), who love each other, but lack the insight and maturity to accept it.

Dostana

Dostana is the first Hindi film that, at the core, is a rectangle [three men loving the same woman], but two of them, guys in this case, pretend to be a couple. Miami is the setting for Dostana. When Sameer [Abhishek Bachchan] and Kunal [John Abraham] are turned down for an apartment because the landlady [Sushmita Mukherjee] doesn't want two strapping young men to corrupt her young sexy niece Neha [Priyanka Chopra], they hatch a plan where they pretend to be gay to secure the apartment. Over a period of time, Sameer, Kunal and Neha become buddies.

Dhoom

Director Sanjay Gadhvi has experimented with a totally new theme in Dhoom-packed with action, entertainment and fun. This Yashraj film production is an ideal movie for all those who could not watch Hollywood flicks like The Italian Job, Fast And The Furious, Oceans Eleven and Matrix Reloaded. The director gives the desi viewers the best of the mix and in turn comes up with what can be claimed to be India's first bike flick.
